Time and again we hear from the successful veterans of this industry the same advice: be persistent. This career is a marathon, not a sprint. It makes sense. It’s completely logical. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, so why should I expect my (hopefully) six-figure voiceover career to happen overnight?
And yet for those of us, like me, who feel so lucky to have found this industry, who feel so passionately about it and want nothing more than to bring words to life behind a microphone, it can be incredibly frustrating when we’re faced with a career track that moves much slower than our passion would dictate.
I’m currently reading a really fantastic book called “The Obstacle is the Way” by Ryan Holiday (@RyanHoliday), and I cannot recommend it highly enough!
I want to share this excerpt that may help inspire anyone who is feeling either frustrated at the lack of jobs they are booking, or overwhelmed by the amount of work they need to do to move their business forward. (Or it can just be motivational/inspirational for anyone!)
Problems are rarely as bad as we think — or rather, they are precisely as bad as we think.
It’s a huge step forward to realize that the worst thing to happen is never the event, but the event and losing your head…
…
The demand on you is this: Once you see the world as it is, for what it is, you must act. The proper perception — objective, rational, ambitious, clean — isolates the obstacle and exposes it for what it is.
…
But boldness is acting anyway, even though you understand the negative and the reality of your obstacle. Decide to tackle what stands in your way — not because you’re a gambler defying the odds but because you’ve calculated them and boldly embrace the risk.
After all, now that you’ve managed perceptions properly, what’s next is to act.
Are you ready?
Remember that this doesn’t mean moving mountains in a day. Every small action leads to a greater goal. So instead of feeling overwhelmed and beaten down, go do something for yourself and your career! Each step and each action adds up, and look at obstacles and roadblocks as opportunities to learn and get better.
Know that you are worthy. And then ACT to make your dream your reality!
