Voiceover talent the world over are concerned about losing their livelihood to artificial intelligence, and I have been posting lately about why you should #hirehuman rather than relying on AI to voice your project.
Today’s reason comes from my amazing voiceover coach, Nancy Wolfson. (www.braintracksaudio.com)
To quote Nancy, “A computer does not have the dimensional impulses to compute and deliver comedic parentheticals.” In other words, humans are able to read through copy, interpret it, and make choices about their delivery that can make us, the listening audience, laugh. Once they make these decisions, people can then apply mic technique to deliver, for example, a snarky aside or a confidential secret. Computers, algorithms and synthetic voices cannot make these decisions, nor can they change up their technique and delivery in this way.
Nancy is far more articulate than I and can certainly explain this much better. (And by the way, she can teach you those techniques I mentioned above, too! She’s got coursework that covers all of this and more.)
