You’ve probably heard lots of people talking about how huge the whole audiobook industry is right now. Maybe you don’t have an agent or a connection to one of the big audiobook production companies, and you think, “Yeah, that’d be nice, but how do you go about breaking in to that market?”
Well, good news friends!
You don’t have to have powerful friends in important places to break into audiobooks. You just need a computer and access to the Internet (both of which I assume you’ve got anyway, as part of your regular workflow for your VO business).
ACX, or Audiobook Creation Exchange (@acx_com) is a fantastic online platform specifically designed to produce more audiobooks. You can read all of the specifics on their actual website, but the gist of it is this: folks who own the rights to various books can post those books on ACX, and then you can audition to become the narrator for the audiobook version! There are two ways you can get paid: either up front in a “per finished hour” method, or you can do a royalty share and make $$ from the sale of the book.
Think of it as a pay-to-play for audiobooks. EXCEPT, you can create a profile to become a narrator for FREE!
I just created my own ACX profile, and I’m looking forward to becoming a part of the community and hopefully to getting to narrate some really cool books soon!
