A very big thanks to Scott Burns at Edge Studio for his article today about thank-you notes. He’s a big proponent of the hand-written word, a dying art in today’s world of technology, social media, e-mail, etc. It’s so true that we’re all quick to jot off e-mails and hit “SEND,” but how many of us take the time to actually write notes anymore?
Scott suggests we all send hand-written thank-you notes to people we work with, from clients to casting directors to the audio engineer at the studio you just recorded in. He even pointed out how one such postcard just garnered work for one of his students.
And my new-found VO friend Ken Karp takes it even further. He highly recommends sending out postcards as a means of marketing. Ken’s point is that it is too easy to quickly hit “delete” on an e-mail, but notes that his website analytics show consistent spikes in his web traffic after he has sent out a series of postcards. Interesting!
So…everything old is new again? Is it akin to Ozzy Osbourne telling his kids, “Everyone has a tattoo. If you want to be original, DON’T get one”? Maybe. Definitely good to think about. And who knows — maybe we can also save the U.S. Postal Service in the process! It’s a win-win! : )
